The RoboAmp

Monday, September 29th, 2008

i got done building housing for my amps.

Mini Monoblock Amps

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

I made some shitty mini monoblock amplifiers from some cheap transistor amplifiers (not even technically operational amps, since you cant perform some sort of linear mathematical operation by their amplification). Since custom short run PCB manufacturing is so cheap and easy now, I’m gonna fab the boards for these and make them sorta en masse. The idea is to build out a sound system designed for messenger bags for bicycling.

Orange Rinds

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Tonights focus was the kitchen. A number of low-brow experiments took place in the kitchen.  It all began off very normal.  I cooked some fried trout po-boy sandwiches.  We ate them and then watched some TV.  Some time later I go to the corner store to buy a bowl of dry ramen noodles.  I notice the oil on the stove, so I filtered out larger particles with a simple mesh strainer, and dedice to perform an experiment.   The question I had was how much melted duck or pork lard must I add to the already full pan of corn oil before the entire pan will solidify when cooled.  this was going well

I started another project attempting to revive these frozen udon noodles in the freezer that must have been almost 1 year old.  So i just toss them in a batch of boiling water.  At first this process seemed off to a poor start as the old noodles were refusing to unbind from eachother.

This is the point which can be argued as genius,  I found myself infront of a pile of mandarin orange peels.  They were probably waiting for the disposer, but I decided to throw them all now into the duck/pork/corn fat+oil pan going full effect.  They fried up to a wonderfully crisy orance brown color.  The flavor was citris bitter but wel tempered with a solid crunch and a mild finish.

My opnion is that they taste delicious.

LOL, Haskell Sings

So I wrote a similar audio synthesizer in Haskell 98. Function programming is pretty hilarious.

I wrote a primative software synthesizer.

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Hello, last night I wrote a software synthesizer inspired by my old commodores and SID synth chips. its pretty basic right now. The file format is pretty simple, the tempo is just the number of quarter notes per minute. The envelope is describes the general sound envelope. Its 8 bins wide with 9 levels per bin (0-8), and there is a continuous linear ramp between bins. This simply shapes the volume of the note over its duration. So something like ‘envelope = 0 6 5 4 3 2 1 0′ would rapidly raise in volume from nothing to 6/8ths the peak then slowly fall back down to 0. the ‘music =’ section then describes the music. It’s broken up into notes. Each note is of the form (duration)(note)(octave).  Duration is in eighth notes, note is like C#, Bb, D, etc.  Octave starts at 0 and keyed at 16.35Hz for octave-0 C.  Octaves are from 0 on up. ‘Middle C’ is octave 4. So something like 4F#3 would play an F-sharp of octave 3 for a half-note duration.

On with the code and examples:

just a reminder in case anyone forgot, apple products are bullshit

i just tried to use an ipod and itunes together today for the first time ever.

biggest piece of shit i’ve ever come across. i cannot believe all you people think apple stuff is in any way good.

i lol that you HAVE to use itunes to sync to your ipod and that you cannot just copy and play music via a usb mass storage device interface. its obvious that ipod is such a restricted device because apple envisions you clicking to buy mp3s through the wildly popular itunes store, how else can they give you this kinda user experience without FORCING you to use their fuckin retarded shitty mp3 player (with built in store).

im sure everyone knows this already, and i guess people are USED to the itunes (getting USED to something is different than something intrinsically being good).  i mean i can get USED to wiping my ass with sand paper, and i probably can infact get quite good at it, where it feels pretty normal, but when it comes down to it, you dont wipe your ass with sandpaper, unless youre into some kind of S&M olympics, which clearly is the arena in which apple plays in.

also, has anyone gotten USED TO the fucking iphone keyboard?  has the multi-touch of the iphone REVOLUTIONIZED your PDA experience the answer is NO.

have you spent money on a bunch of useless apps from the iphone store where you can show off the magic of a low cost digital gyroscope by tilting your iphone and watching a virtual 40oz pour beer out? amazing.

have you really put shazam to use identifying all those tracks that you wanted to know the artist? did you have to ask your friends to hold on a sec because you had to try over again because someone was talking while you were trying to demo it? did you realize that ANYONE can use this service, not just iphone users?

url to .m3u playlist maker

Friday, September 5th, 2008

i put it up at http://beta.modron.net/ for now

have you ever wanted to take every mp3 link on a page and queue them all up in winamp or somewhere all at once. heres a simple little tool that does that for you. either use the link above or you can use the form directly below.

The URL to M3U encoder finds all a href links that point to MP3s and encodes them all into an .M3U playlist.
